Introduction

Alongside the ""Capitol"" in Washington, the Houses of Parliament – properly known as the ""Palace of Westminster"" – in the United Kingdom are the foremost inspiration for building parliaments in modern-day Europe – and beyond. The neo-Gothic building was designed by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin after its predecessor was largely destroyed by fire.
