Introduction
The design of Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister, who fled the Nazis, was embraced by Atatürk as he felt it radiated the strength and durability of the Republic of Turkey. The ideas of Kemalist laicism continue to clash with religious-conservative visions of statehood. Parliamentary elections in 2011 saw the first legal campaigning in Kurdish, but state repression of Kurdish opposition parties and high electoral thresholds for small parties to enter parliament persist.
