TJ Parliament

Introduction

Dushanbe is increasingly modernising its architectural face but has preserved an example of early Soviet architecture for its bicameral parliament. The building used to house the Supreme Soviet, and recent renovation work revealed the busts of Stalin, Lenin, Marx and Engels in a hidden room. President Rakhmonov has ruled the poorest of the post-Soviet republics since 1994 and elections continuously fail to meet basic democratic standards.
