Introduction
The Consultative Assembly ("Majlis as-Shura") was introduced in 1993 as part of limited reforms, but power remains with the royal family and political parties are forbidden. The king legislates by decree and the Consultative Assembly, whose members are appointed by the king, merely acts in an advisory capacity. The first female councillors appointed in 2013 use separate entrances to access the building, the porticos of which reflect the style of early Islamic archways.
