Opposite the monument to independence in a coastal park, the "Palace of the People" housed the unicameral parliament until it was suspended in 2008 following a coup d’état. Elections were delayed many times over the course of six years, sparking protests that killed dozens of people. Parliament was finally reinstated through elections in 2013 following mediation by the UN. The assembly held its opening session in January 2014.
