Introduction
The People's National Assembly "al-Majlis al-Sha'abi al-Watani" is the directly elected lower house of Algeria's bicameral parliament. It is housed in what used to be the City Hall, a monumental building facing the ocean that was constructed during French colonial rule. The National Liberation Front that fought the French for independence remains the dominant force in parliament, with President Bouteflika ruling the country since 1991.
